On February 21, 2022, 9-year-old Sophia Cohen was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and initiated chemotherapy treatment. Sophia is the granddaughter of our long-time St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parishioners, Tim and Margie Glennon. Tim cantors at our 8:15 AM Sunday Mass; Margie is a lector and religious education teacher in our parish.

Sophie is undergoing a lengthy duration of therapy and will require a bone marrow transplant to treat her aggressive AML. At this time, there are no matches for Sophie in the donor database. During her lengthy hospital stays, Sophie has been an inspiration to everyone she has met. She's earned a reputation among the hospital nurses for naming and caring for her stuffed animals, and the staff eagerly anticipates the naming of new additions to the crew. Sophie's dinosaur, Doug, was given a port to help Sophie understand how her own intravenous port works.

While Sophie and her parents are fortunate to have a very strong support system within their family and community at St. Vladimir in New York, those of us who are far away want to know how we can help. PRAYER is the most important way we can care for this dear family. For those of us who are able, we can also register to be listed in the bone marrow/stem-cell donor database.

Update May 15, 2022:

Sophia has now completed two rounds of chemotherapy with a third scheduled. She will still require a bone marrow transplant, but for now she is in remission as a result of the treatment she has been able to receive. She is currently at home enjoying some much needed "normal time" with her family. As there is still no perfect bone marrow match for Sophia, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church held a donor drive to get more people registered in the national bone marrow donor database.  We successfully registered 30 people onsite, with several more opting for registration kits mailed to their homes.  If you are between the ages of 18-40, please consider registering online for a swab kit to be sent to your home.

Many of us who want to help are outside the suggested age range, so we all signed a t-shirt for Sophia to let her know we are all praying for her.  This will be sent to Sophia along with donor cards that were signed by those who registered for the database.
