Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774–1821) was the first American-born person to be canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. A convert to Catholicism, she was a wife, mother, and educator who founded the first American congregation of religious sisters, the Sisters of Charity. She is also credited with starting the Catholic school system in America.
